To Apple, Love Taylor

애플에게.

I write this to explain why I’ll be holding back my album, 1989, from the new streaming service, Apple Music. I feel this deserves an explanation because Apple has been and will continue to be one of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans. I respect the company and the truly ingenious minds that have created a legacy based on innovation and pushing the right boundaries. 

왜 제가 1989 앨범을 새로운 스트리밍 시장인 애플뮤직에서 서비스를 안하려는지 설명하겠어요.

애플은 지금까지 그리고 앞으로도 내 음악 판매와 팬들과 접촉하는 데 있어서 좋은 파트너니까요.

 

I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company. 

애플 뮤직이 신규 가입자에게 3달의 무료 시범 기간을 선보인다죠.

그 3달 동안 애플 뮤직은 작곡자, 프로듀서, 다른 모든 아티스트에게 돈을 지불하지 않을거고요.

전 이런 사실에 매우 충격받았고, 실망했답니다.

This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs. 

이건 나를 위해서가 아니에요.

나는 고맙게도 이미 5집 가수이고 공연을 통해 스스로 밴드, 동료, 모든 매니저팀을 서포트 가능해요.

이건 새 싱글을 내놓고도 그에 대한 대가를 받지 못할 새 아티스트, 밴드를 위한 일이에요.

이건 빛을 청산할 저작권료를 받을거라 생각하는 어린 송라이터를 위한 거기도 하고,

지치지 않고 끈임없이 창조하는 혁신적인 프로듀서를 위한 것이기도 해요.

그러나 일 년에서 1/4 동안은 자기 음악에 대한 가치를 받지 못해요.

These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.

이건 심술부리는 어린아이의 불평이 아니에요.

이건 애플을 선망해서 공개적으로 말하기를 꺼려하는 제 주변의 모든 가수, 작곡자, 프로듀서를 위한 거에요.

I realize that Apple is working towards a goal of paid streaming. I think that is beautiful progress. We know how astronomically successful Apple has been and we know that this incredible company has the money to pay artists, writers and producers for the 3 month trial period… even if it is free for the fans trying it out. 

애플이 돈을 지불하는 스트리밍을 목표로 향해 간다는 걸 알았어요.

굉장히 바람직한 과정이라 생각해요.

우리는 애플이 얼마나 천문학적으로 성공했는지도 알고요.

무료 시범기간인 3달 동안 가수, 작곡자, 프로듀서에게 지불할 돈이 있다는 것도 압니다.

팬들에게는 무료로 제공을 할지라도요.

Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing. I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done. I hope that soon I can join them in the progression towards a streaming model that seems fair to those who create this music. I think this could be the platform that gets it right. 

3달은 너무나 긴 시간이고, 대가를 받지 못한 채 일하라는 건 불공정하죠.

이건 애플이 지금까지 해 온 것에 대한 사랑, 숭배, 존경의 뜻에서 말하는 겁니다.

음악을 창조하는 사람들에게 있어서 정당한 스트리밍 모델이 구축되는 과정에 제가 동참했으면 좋겠네요.

But I say to Apple with all due respect, it’s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this. We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation. 

애플에겐 죄송한 말씀이지만, 아직 정책을 바꾸기엔 늦지 않았어요.

이로 인해 깊게 영향받을 음악 산업 종사자들의 마음을 바꾸기에도 늦지 않았어요.

우리가 애플 당신에게 무료로 아이폰을 요구하지 않잖아요?

(똑같은 논리로) 당신들도 우리에게 대가 없이 음악을 제공하라 요구하지 마세요.
