using her as bait vs using her as a bait

뭐가 맞나요?

구글 검색해보니 둘다 모두 책이나 기사등에 나와서 헷갈리네요.

as:

"An Alabama teen will be allowed to sue a school district that used her as “bait” in a botched sting operation designed to catch another student"

as a:

"is in real danger from his former brutal associates who are using her as a bait to draw him back for"

기사등에 나오는건 전자가 훨씬 많이나오는데 문법적으로 후자가 틀린건가요?

문법 책에는 무엇을 분류하거나 묘사 할때는 a를 붙이라고 나오던데 문장에서 미끼(bait)으로 classify하는거니 a가 붙는게 맞는거 아닌가요?
