이 사진은 사뮤엘 알렉산더 아르마스라는 21주 된 아기가
조셉 브루너라는 외과의사에게 수술을 받는 사진이다.
이 아기는 척추피열이라는 병을 진단 받았으며 엄마의 자궁에서 나오면 살지 못 할것이었다.
어린 사뮤엘의 엄마 줄라 아르마스는 아틀란타의 산과학 간호사였으며
닥터 브루너의 훌륭한 수술방법에 대해서 알고 있었다.
내쉬빌에 자리잡은 Vanderbilt 대학 의학센터에서 근무하는 닥터 브루너는 이러한 특별 수술을
아기가 아직 엄마의 자궁내에 있을때 실행한다. 수술하는 동안 닥터 브루너는 제왕 절개 수술을 통해
엄마의 자궁을 옮겨 조그맣게 자궁을 잘라내어 아기를 수술 하는 것이다.
닥터 브루느가 어린 사뮤엘에게 수술을 마쳤을때
사뮤엘이 그의 작지만 다 발달된 손을 절개부분밖으로 내밀어 의사의 손가락을 꼬옥 잡았다.
중요 기관의 형성 모습과 인간의 삶이 형성되는 모습에 대한 중요한 다른 증거들을 보여주는
임신 이미지를 초점으로 한 타임스 유럽의 한 기사에서 닥터 브루너는 그의 손가락을 아기가 잡았을때가
자신의 인생에서 가장 감동적인 순간이었으며 순간 얼어 움직일수가 없었다고 밝혔다.
이 사진은 이 훌륭한 순간을 아주 깨끗하게 잡아내었다.
편집자는 이 사진을 희망의 손이라고 이름 지었다. "21주된 태아 사뮤엘 알렉산더 아르마스의 손이
엄마의 자궁을 벗어나와 생명의 선물을 주어 감사라도 하는 듯 닥터 조셉 브루너의 손가락을 잡았다.."
라고 부연 설명이 되어있다.
어린 사뮤엘의 엄마가 말하길 사진을 보았을때 몇일동안이나 울었다고 한다.
"그 사진은 제 임신이 신체적 문제나 병에 대한 것이 아닌 작으 사람에 대한 것이라는 것을
깨닫게 해주었어요"라고 했다.
사뮤엘은 아주 건강하게 태어났으며 그 수술은 100퍼센트 성공적이었다.
It should be “The Picture of the Year,” or perhaps, “Picture of the Decade.
“It won’t be. The picture is that of a 21-week-old unborn baby named Samuel Alexander Armas,
who is being operated on by a surgeon named Joseph Bruner.
The baby was diagnosed with spina bifida and would not survive if removed from his mother’s womb.
Little Samuel’s mother, Julie Armas, is an obstetrics nurse in Atlanta.
She knew of Dr. Bruner’s remarkable surgical procedure.
Practicing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, he performs these special
operations while the baby is still in the womb. During the procedure,
the doctor removes the uterus via a C-section and makes a small incision to operate on the baby.
As Dr. Bruner completed the surgery on little Samuel, the little guy reached his tiny,
but fully developed, hand through the incision and firmly grasped the surgeon’s finger.
In a Time Europe article highlighting new pregnancy imagery that shows the formation of major
organs and other significant evidence of the formation of human life,
Dr. Bruner was reported as saying that when hisfinger was grasped.
It was the most emotional moment of his life, and that for an instant during the procedure
he was just frozen, totally immobile.
The photograph captures this amazing event with perfect clarity. The editors titled the picture,
“Hand of Hope.” The text explaining the picture begins, “The tiny hand of 21-week-old foetus
Samuel Alexander Armas emerges from the mother’s uterus to grasp the finger of Dr. Joseph Bruner
as if thanking the doctor for the gift of life”
Little Samuel’s mother said they “wept for days” when they saw the picture.
She said, “The photo reminds us my pregnancy isn’t about disability or an illness,
it’s about a little person.”
Samuel was born in perfect health, the operation 100 per cent successful.
