Matter of conveying additional opinions regarding the appointment of the Korean government as Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Australia
I am a citizen of the Republic of Korea. I also relayed my opinion via email a few days ago.
Of course, I still wish your country prosperity and well-being and support the eternal friendship between Korea and Australia.
However, unfortunately, as a citizen of the Republic of Korea, I feel ashamed and sorry that a person suspected of a crime has been appointed as the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Australia.
Former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop, who took office as South Korea's ambassador to Australia, is under investigation on charges of exerting external pressure on the investigation into the death of the late Corporal Chae Soo-geun.
Recently, circumstances were discovered in which former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop received telephone instructions from the President before exerting external pressure on the investigation.
Perhaps the president is concerned about this incident being linked to him, and to prevent this, he did not appoint former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop as ambassador through the normal process.
First, while appointing an important diplomatic ambassador, he ignored that the person was under investigation and failed to recognize that he was banned from leaving the country.
Second, the Ministry of Justice is an agency that imposes bans on leaving the country and at the same time conducts personnel verification of public officials. It makes no sense that the agency in charge of the ban on departure was not aware of the ban on departure while conducting personnel verification.
Third, after the government became aware of the ban on leaving the country, it lifted it with unprecedented speed.
Fourth, it was revealed that only four hours of formal investigation was conducted on the person suspected of the most important crime in this case before leaving the country, and that the submitted mobile phone was newly opened after the incident, making it meaningless evidence.
Former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop practically fled to Australia to escape criminal charges. In order to prevent criminal charges being passed on to him, the president used his public power privately to help his accomplice escape to Australia.
It is our opinion that the government should not lift the ban on former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop from leaving the country and appoint him as the ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Australia, but rather request an arrest warrant due to concerns about his flight and destruction of evidence.
I believe that appointing such a person as the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Australia is a profound diplomatic discourtesy to your country.
Former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop has already been appointed as South Korea's ambassador to Australia, and although he has arrived in Australia, I think it is not too late.
We sincerely ask that the other host country withdraw its consent (agrement) against former Minister of National Defense Lee Jong-seop even now and deport him to the Republic of Korea.
Thank you for reading my long post.
I am concerned that errors and typos may occur due to my lack of English, which may lead to misunderstandings or distortions, so I am delivering this message in parallel, in my native language, Korean.
