태양계에 목성 4배 만한 ‘숨겨진 행성’있다?
태양계에 목성의 4배 크기인 ‘비밀의 행성’이 존재할까.
2006년 명왕성이 행성의 지위를 잃어 태양계 9번째 행성의 자리가 비어진 가운데 지금껏 단 한 번도 포착된 적이 없는 미지 행성의 존재가 드러나 학계의 비상한 관심을 받고 있다.
미국 루지애나 대학의 존 머티지•다니엘 휘트머 교수는 최근 태양계에 떠도는 한 혜성의 경로 변화를 추적하던 중 태양계에 목성보다 4배 더 큰 가스 행성이 존재한다는 증거를 발견했다고 주장했다.
존재 자체가 불분명한 이 행성은 일단 행운의 여신을 뜻하는 티케(Tyche)란 이름을 얻었다. 티케의 존재가 사실일 경우 과학자들은 이 행성이 수소와 헬륨 등 대부분 기체로 구성돼 있으며 대기는 목성과 비슷할 것이라고 추측했다.
우주에서 바라볼 경우 티케는 목성과 마찬가지로 다양한 띠가 존재할 것이며, 다채로운 색깔로 매우 아름다운 경관일 것이라는 과학자들의 추정.
또 태양과의 거리가 굉장히 멀어서, 태양과 명왕성의 거리에 375배에 달하며 지구와 태양 간 거리보다는 무려 1만 5000배나 더 떨어져 있을 것으로 파악된다.
목성보다 4배나 더 큰 행성이 태양계에 정말 존재한다면 왜 아직까지 한 번도 관측되지 않았을까.
연구진은 이 질문에 대해 “티케가 태양으로부터 거리가 매우 멀 뿐만 아니라 오르트구름에 존재하고 있어서 관측이 어려웠을 것”이라고 대답했다. 오르트구름은 태양계 가장 바깥쪽에 먼지와 얼음이 둥근 띠 모양으로 결집된 거대한 집합소다.
휘트머 교수는 “티케가 발견될 경우 다른 외계행성과 마찬가지로 다양한 위성들을 보유하고 있을 것으로 본다.”면서 “관측 이전 수학적 계산으로 그 존재를 확인하게 된 해왕성처럼 티케의 존재가 사실로 밝혀지길 바란다.”고 말했다.

While Pluto lost official "planet" status in 2006, leaving empty the position of our solar system's ninth planet, the proposed existence of the as-yet-never-seen planet Tyche is drawing the urgent attention of scientists, according to the British Daily Mail newspaper.
American astrophysicists John Matese and Daniel Whitmire from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette first proposed Tyche's existence in order to explain a change in path of comets entering the solar system.
The planet, whose existence is yet to be confirmed, has been given the name Tyche, after a Greek goddess that governed a city's fortune and destiny. Scientists expect that if Tyche exists, it will be composed mainly of hydrogen and helium, with an atmosphere similar to that Jupiter's.
Also, Tyche will probably have colorful spots and bands and clouds, like Jupiter, Professor Whitmire said.
Tyche is believed to have an orbit around 15,000 times further from the Sun than Earth's, and 375 times further than Pluto's.
So how could we have missed such a massive planet in our own solar system?
The researchers explained Tyche's obscurity using its sheer distance from the Sun. If Tyche exists, it is hidden within the Oort Cloud, the outer shell of asteroids in our solar system, they added.
"You'd also expect it to have moons. All the outer planets have them," Professor Whitmire said. He said that he expects Tyche's existence to be confirmed using mathematical observations even before it is actually visually captured. The planet Nepturne was discovered in the same way.
