어느 아침 일하러 가는 중에 호수 옆길을 내려가던 

A tender hearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake 

마음 따듯한 여인은 반쯤 얼은 불쌍한 뱀을 보았어 

His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew 

그 예쁘고 화려한 색의 피부는 이슬로 다 얼어붙었지 

"Oh well," she cried, "I'll take you in and I'll take care of you“ 

그녀는 “오, 널 데리고 가서 돌봐줄게”라며 울부짖었어

"Take me in oh tender woman (come on in), take me in, for heaven's sake (come on in) 

“날 데리고 가요, 착한 여인 (어서요), 날, 제발 

Take me in, for heaven's sake, take me in tender woman," sighed the snake 

날 데리고 가요, 제발, 날, 착한 여인“하고 뱀은 탄식을 했어

 

She wrapped him up all cozy in a curvature of silk 

그녀는 실크 안에 뱀 전체를 편안하게 감쌌어 

And then laid him by the fireside with some honey and some milk 

그리고 꿀, 우유와 함께 불가에 누여 놓았어 

Now she hurried home from work that night as soon as she arrived 

그녀는 그 밤에 일을 마치고 서둘러 집에 갔어, 도착하자마자 

She found that pretty snake she'd taking in had been revived 

데리고 온 예쁜 뱀이 되살아난 걸 보았어

Now she clutched him to her bosom, "You're so beautiful," she cried 

그녀는 뱀을 가슴에 끌어안고 “넌 참 예쁘구나”라고 말했어 

"But if I hadn't brought you in by now you might have died“ 

“네가 널 데려오지 않았다면 넌 지금쯤 죽었을 거야” 

Now she stroked his pretty skin again and then kissed and held him tight 

그녀는 그 예쁜 피부를 두들겨본 후 키스하고 꽉 안았어 

But instead of saying thanks, that snake gave her a vicious bite (oh...) 

하지만 고맙다는 말 대신, 그 뱀은 사악하게도 그녀를 깨물고 말았지

 "I saved you," cried that woman "And you've bit me even, why? 

“네가 널 구해줬잖아, 근데 왜 날 깨무는 거지?”하고 그녀는 물었어 

And you know your bite is poisonous and now I'm gonna die“ 

“네가 깨문 건 독이 있어서 난 죽을 거야” 

"Oh shut up, silly woman," said the reptile with a grin 

“오, 조용해, 어리석은 여인”하고 뱀은 웃으면서 말했어 

"You knew damn well I was a snake before you brought me in 

‘날 데려오기 전에 내가 뱀이란 걸 알았잖아“ 

이게 우리 나라에 들어와서는 최진사댁 셋째 딸로 바뀌네... 헐~
