[스포탈코리아] 축구 경기가 늘 멋진 것은 아니다. 지난 토요일에 있었던 한 경기가 바로 그랬다. 볼턴 원더러스가 밀월에 1-2로 뒤진 상황에서 경기장의 한쪽에서는 경기 결과보다 더 걱정스러운 일이 일어났다.
한국 대표팀의 스타인 이청용은 교체를 준비하며 몸을 풀고 있었다. 그와 함께 몸을 풀던 3명의 선수들은 일부 홈 팬들에게 인종 차별을 당했다고 주장했다. 21세 이하 영국 단일팀에 선발되어 올림픽에 참가했던 마빈 소델은 트위터에 자신이 당한 인종차별 사건에 대해 언급했다. FA가 유감을 표한 사이 경찰은 월요일이 돼서야 보고 받았고 불가피하게 법적 절차를 진행할 것으로 보인다.
영국 축구계는 지난 수년간 인종차별을 없애기 위해 노려했고, 실제로 큰 성과를 이뤘지만 여전히 해야 할 일이 많이 남아 있다는 것은 영국 축구의 어그러진 단면이다. 밀월은 이미 과거에도 관중석에서 인종차별 논란을 일으키는 문제를 경험해왔고 그 문제를 해결하기 위해 앞장 선 팀이다.
그럼에도 밀월의 홈 구장에 있던 나는 그들이 축구팬으로 가장한 정신 나가 멍청이들을 없애려는 노력을 하지 않는다는 것을 내 귀로 직접 확인했다. 이청용과 대런 프라틀리, 베닉 아포베, 그리고 소델은 사건에 연루된 선수들이다. FA는 이미 이 일을 감시하고 선수들에게 알리기 위해 현대 영국 축구의 첫 번째 흑인 선수이자 인종차별에 격렬히 반대하는 운동가인 브렌단 베이트슨을 지명했다.
볼턴과 밀월 모두 사건에 대한 뉴스가 터진 후 인종 차별을 규탄하고 관련자들을 모두 색출하도록 돕겠다는 약속을 하는 모범적인 행동을 보여줬다. 불행하게도 모든 축구인들이 교양이 있지는 않다. 개인적으로 소델은 이 문제를 공론화하는 용감함을 보여줬다고 생각한다. 꼭 트위터에서 그 사건을 말해야 했는지 묻지 않을 수 없지만 그렇게라도 하지 않으면 너무 많은 것들이 허용된다.
그의 말이 전적으로 맞다. “2012년 영국 사람들이 축구 경기 중에 여전히 인종차별을 외치고 있다!? 충격적이다.” 그는 또 “이청용과 프랫, 베닉 그리고 나는 온갖 이야기를 들었지만 경찰은 관중석에 서서 별다른 제지를 하지 않았다… 가장 웃긴 것은 만약 내가 직접 반응해 관중들에게 어떤 말을 했다면 내가 징계를 받았을 것이다.”
다행인 것은 모든 상황이 딱 들어맞기 때문에 책임을 따질 것으로 보인다. 그들에게 유죄 판결이 난다면 그들은 다시는 축구 경기를 관람하지 못하게 되길 바란다.

Bolton's Marvin Sordell claims racist abuse after Millwall game
Marvin Sordell claims he and three other Bolton stars were racially abused during Wanderers’ defeat at the New Den.
And in the bitter aftermath of John Terry’s racial slur against Anton Ferdinand, Football Association bosses have launched an immediate probe.
Both clubs are also investigating the claims made by Sordell on his Twitter account following Bolton’s defeat – a result which increases the pressure on manager Owen Coyle.
Certainly Wanderers are taking the matter more seriously than alleged incidents during the club’s visit to Millwall for an FA Cup tie last February.
Ryo Miyaichi, now on loan at Wigan, reported a bottle had been thrown at him during that 2-0 victory.
And after one of the final games of his career, Fabrice Muamba also took to Twitter and labelled Millwall supporters a ‘disgrace.’ He added: “Some of the abuse we receive (sic) no need for it.”
In the light of these latest complaints from Sordell, a Millwall supporter responded: “their (sic) weren’t monkey chants.....it’s called atmosphere mate.”
Millwall have a number of black players in their squad, including former Wanderers defender Danny Shittu.
But Sordell, an unused substitute, was in no doubt what he heard.
On the way home he tweeted: “Putting the match aside, its 2012 in england and people are still shouting racial abuse at a football game!? #Shocking’
He added: ‘Chungy, Pratts, Benik and i had all sorts of things said to us.
“The police were standing yards away and did nothing...’
As was the case when Muamba aired his grievances on the social networking site, former Watford striker Sordell was verbally attacked for his posting. In fact, one person commented: “You’re just as bad as Muamba. I believe his claims were disproven too.”
However, Sordell responded: “oh so somebody calling me a slave **** isnt racist.”
And in a sad indictment of the way justice is perceived to be handed down by football chiefs, Sordell added: “Funniest thing is if I had come on and scored and gave them some back, i would be the one who got fined.’
Bolton have confirmed they are looking into Sordell’s claims. They issued a brief statement saying: “We are now working with Millwall to investigate the matter and the club have informed us that they will be speaking to the police and match officials.
“Both clubs remain determined that racist behaviour or language will not be tolerated.”
A Millwall spokesman added: “Millwall and Bolton Wanderers are investigating allegations made by Bolton player Marvin Sordell that he was subjected to racial abuse by an individual while warming up as a substitute during Saturday’s Championship clash at The Den.
“At this stage, we are trying to find any1(필터링에 걸림) corroborative evidence we could use to take the allegations forward.”
Sordell’s racism row overshadowed another difficult 90 minutes for manager Coyle and his team. Chris Eagles cancelled out Darius Henderson’s first-half opener with a 50th-minute free-kick and then missed a penalty with the score still at 1-1. Henderson fired home a 90th-minute winner to leave Wanderers 18th in the table going into the international break.
“Standing here right now, this is the worst feeling I’ve ever had in football,” said Coyle after the game. “We were really poor in the first half and I let the players know in no uncertain terms that we simply hadn’t been good enough.
“In the second half we played ever so well, but it’s becoming a reoccurring theme. We were not clinical.”
