미국 소재의 국제해양전문매체인 IHS 마리타임360은 27일 작년 4월 16일에 전복돼 수많은 인명피해를 불러온 세월호를 한국정부가 아직 그대로 물속에 내버려 두고 있으며, 이에 대해 세월호 유가족들은 참사 1주기를 맞기 전에 세월호의 조속한 인양을 거듭 촉구하고 있다는 기사를 게재했다.

세월호 유가족들, 세월호의 신속한 인양 촉구

세월호 침몰로 실종 상태인 승객 9명의 유가족들이 실종된 가족사진을 들고 있다.

Families of the nine Sewol victims who remain missing have urged the government to hoist the vessel ahead of the first anniversary of the tragedy on 16 April.

실종된 9명의 세월호 희생자 가족들이 정부를 상대로 4월 16일 참사 1주년을 맞기 전에 세월호 인양을 할 것을 요구해왔다.

On that date last year, Sewol, carrying 476 passengers and crew, capsized during a routine Incheon-Jeju trip. More than 300 of them were Danwon High School students and teachers.

작년 그 날, 476명의 승객과 승무원이 탑승했던 세월호는 인천-제주 간 정규 운항 중 전복됐다. 승객 중 300명 이상이 단원고등학교 학생들과 교사들이었다.

Of those on board, 295 bodies were recovered while 172 people were rescued. Search and rescue efforts for the remaining nine victims were called off on 11 November 2014, the same day Sewol captain Lee Jun-seok was jailed 36 years for negligence and abandonment.

탑승한 승객 중, 172명은 구조된 반면 295명의 시신이 수습됐다. 수색과 구조 노력은 2014년 11월 11일에 중단됐으며, 같은 날 세월호의 이준석 선장은 업무태만과 배를 버리고 나온 혐의에 대해 36년형을 받고 수감됐다.

The government’s explanation for calling off the search was the increasingly remote chances of finding the bodies and the growing risk to rescue divers. Two civilian divers died during the search after losing consciousness in the waters.

수색을 철회한 이유에 대해 정부는 시신을 찾을 가능성이 점점 희박해지며 잠수사들의 위험 부담이 커지고 있기 때문이라고 말했다. 두 명의 민간 잠수사들이 수색 도중 의식을 잃고 사망했다.

Along with a hydrographic survey done by the Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology, the government said it has finished e-valuating how and when the ferry would be lifted from the Maenggol Channel.

한국해양과학기술원의 수로 지리학적 조사와 함께, 정부는 어떻게 그리고 언제 세월호가 맹골수역에서 인양될지에 대한 평가를 끝냈다고 말했다.

However, it has yet to announce whether it will actually go ahead with the plan. The recovery process has been estimated to cost taxpayers KRW620 billion (USD560 million), since Sewol operator Chonghaejin Marine has gone out of business.

그러나 정부는 그 계획을 실제로 실행에 옮길지에 대해서는 아직 발표하지 않고 있다. 그 인양 과정에는 한화 6,200억 원(미화 5억6천만 달러)의 세금이 소요될 것으로 예상하는데, 이는 세월호의 선사인 청해진 해운이 폐업했기 때문이다.

Nonetheless, the families are pressing for swift action in hope that the nine bodies would finally be found.

그럼에도 불구하고 세월호 유족들은 9구의 시신이 마침내 발견될지도 모른다는 희망으로 빠른 조치를 요구하고 있다.

“There are nine bodies that are waiting to be returned to their family members,” the associations for the families said in a statement.

“가족들에게로 돌아가기를 기다리고 있는 9구의 시신이 있다”고 세월호 가족 위원회가 성명에서 말했다.
