The Efforts of the Government of Japan in Response to the Issue of the 
Name of the "Sea of Japan" 
(Recent Developments) 


1. Request to the BBC 

In February 2003 a Korean newspaper reported that the BBC had used a map 
on its website that contained joint notation of the names "Sea of Japan" 
and "East Sea". In response to this report, the Embassy of Japan in the 
U.K. contacted the corporation about the matter. The BBC replied that it 
believed the term "Sea of Japan" was the most widely recognized name for 
the stretch of water concerned and that it usually used this term. 


2. Request to the CNN 



In March 2003 CNN used a map on its news screen that contained joint 
notation of the names "Sea of Japan" and "East Sea". Similarly, in an 
article on CNN's website, the company used the joint notation. In 
response, the Consulate General of Japan in Atlanta contacted the CNN 
headquarters about the matter. CNN replied that they fully understand the 
position of the Japanese government. CNN is reviewing its policy regarding 
how it identifies the Sea of Japan.
