Elsa’s character arc is arguably the most compelling in the story. 

엘사의 캐릭터 변화는 영화에서 가장 주목받아야 할 것들중의 하나야.

As a young child, she is blessed with cryokinetic powers that she cannot control. 

그녀는 그녀가 감당할 수 없었던 냉각의 힘을 그녀 유년기의 축복으로써 받았어

After an accident with her sister, Elsa’s parents isolate her, teach her that she’s dangerous, and demand that she emotionally castrate herself (“conceal, don’t feel”). 

안나와의 사고가 일어난 후에, 엘사의 부모님은 그녀를 독방에 가두고, 그녀에게 그녀(의 파워)는 위험하다 가르치고, 그녀의 감정을 숨길것을 요구하지. (뻘소리: Castrate는 거세하다라는 단어로도 쓰입니다. 심영?)

Those lessons are so ingrained that she continues hiding herself away even as an adult and her parents die. 

이'교훈'들은 엘사에게 깊이 뿌리박혀 엘사가 성인이 되고 그녀의 부모님에 돌아가신 후에도 엘사가 스스로를 고립시키게 만들죠.

It is not until her power is exposed and she runs away that she finds beauty in herself and her power. 

엘사의 파워가 드러나고 그녀가 도망쳤을 때에야 엘사는 그녀 자신과 그녀의 파워가 매우 아름답다는걸 발견하게 돼.

Her journey to self acceptance, and then acceptance by her sister and her people, is a powerful and much-needed narrative for today’s young people.

그녀의 자아 수용(self-acceptance)을 위한 (그리고 그녀의 여동생과 그녀의 왕국민들에게 받아들여지기 위한) 여행은 요즘 젋은이들에 매우 효과있고 필요한 독백이라고 생각해.

Originally, however, Elsa was slated to be the villain. According to the Internet Movie Database:

하지만, 엘사의 초기 컨셉은 악역(빌런)이었어.

When the character’s major song, “Let it Go,” was played for the producers, they concluded that the song was not only very appealing, but its themes of personal empowerment and self-acceptance were too positive for a villain to express. Thus, the story was rewritten….

하지만 그녀의 메인 송 "Let It Go"가 제작자들을 위해 연주되어졌을때, 제작자들은 이 노래가 매우 호소력이 짙을 뿐만 아니라 이 노래가 가지고 있는 내적 강화 (personal empowerment) 와 자아 수용 (self-acceptance)의 주제는 악역으로써 표현되기는 너무 긍정적이었다고 판단하지. 그래서 겨울왕국의 이야기는 다시 쓰이게 돼..

This, for starters, explains a lot of the clumsier parts of the film. 

이 부분은 영화에서 앞뒤가 안맞았던 많은 부분들을 설명해주지.

Hans’ betrayal comes completely out of left field at the end;

한스의 배신은 끝에 가서 너무 갑작스럽게 일어나;

his character seems truly genuine from the beginning of the story such that his reversal seems contrived.

원래는 이 부분들은 아렌델에서 몰아치던 폭풍을 의미해. 그리고 엘사는 눈폭풍이 아렌델을 황폐화시켜도 전혀 상관하지 않을거라 선언하는 장면이지. 매우 악역다운 부분이 아닐 수 없어.

Make no mistake. Elsa was intended to be the bad guy, and re-imagining her is the best decision Disney made in this film.

잊지 마, 엘사는 원래 악역이 될 운명이었어. 그리고 그걸 뒤집은건 디즈니가 이 영화에 관해서 할 수 있었던 가장 뛰어난 선택이었지.

Think of what Frozen would have been like with Elsa, sitting in her ice palace, letting (or actively making) a snowstorm ravage her homeland.

만약 엘사가 그녀의 얼음 궁전에 앉아 눈보라가 그녀의 고향을 유린하도록 놔뒀다면 (혹은 만들었다면) 영화 겨울왕국이 어땠을지 상상해봐.

The unique dynamic between the sisters, Elsa’s compelling conflict of what to do with her powers, and the climax where Ana saves her sister’s life, would have all been ruined or substantially tainted. 굉장히 특별한 (유니크한) 자매간의 심적 변화도, 엘사의 골칫덩어리 능력 문제도, 안나가 극적으로 엘사의 생명을 구하는 장면도 모두 망했거나 퇴색되었었겠지.

 Instead, we would have received a perhaps slightly altered princess movie that falls neatly in line with the canned narrative Disney had been churning out for decades. Yawn.

대신, 우리는 디즈니가 몇십년간 계속 만들었던 흔해빠진 (어쩌면 조금은 다른 하지만 같은 선상의)공주 영화나 봐야했겠지. (하암)

We also would have gotten a movie that was much less positive for women. 

그리고 그 영화는 여자에 대해서 훨씬 덜 긍정적이기도 했겠고.

Disney is no stranger to playing on harmful portrayals of women, and in this iteration of the film, they would have added the “Ice Queen” archetype to their list—quite literally, this time. 

디즈니는 여자들의 위험한 이미지들을 극화(劇化) 시키는게 전혀 낯설지 않아. 그리고 이 뻔했을 뻔한 영화에서, 디즈니는 (말 그대로의 의미로) "얼음여왕" 의 전형을 그 목록에 올렸을지도 몰라.

In fact, the original title of the project was “The Snow Queen.” 실토하자면, 이 프로젝트의 원래 이름은 "눈의 여왕" 이었어.

Given Disney’s penchant for creating one-dimensional villains for their heroes to defeat, I must say I breathed a retroactive sigh of relief when I realized Elsa was saved from a near-fatal character design. 디즈니가 그들의 영웅들이 무찌르기 위한 일차원적인 악당(빌런)들을 만들어내는걸 매우 좋아한다는 점을 생각할때, 엘사가 (잔인하다고 말해도 될 정도의) 디즈니 캐릭터 디자인의 마수에서 벗어난 순간 난 안도의 한숨을 내쉬어야만 했지.

Whether they realized it or not, Disney producers realized that women did not need more representations of them that showed them as heartless, unfeeling, and cruel. (이 부분은 원본이 좀 이상합니다.. realized가 두번 쓰였거든요. 그래서 중의적인 부분은 번역을 생략)

디즈니 제작자들은 여성들이 그들을 좀 더 비정하고, 무감각하고, 잔인하다고 생각되게 하는 것들을 더 이상 필요해 하지 않다고 생각했지.

They need heroes like Ana, Elsa’s sister, who is forever optimistic, spunky, and awkward. 

여성들은 안나같이 긍정적이고, 용감하고, 어색한 영웅상을 필요로 해.

But they also need heroes like Elsa, because there are girls out there who have been told their whole lives that they are dangerous and worthless, either directly or indirectly. 하지만 그들은 엘사같은 영웅상도 필요로 하지. 왜냐면 세상에는 그녀들의 일생 내내 (직접 혹은 간접적으로) '너희들은 위험하다'는 소리를 들어온 소녀들이 있기 때문이지. 

They need to know that there are other options for them than becoming cruel, heartless, and, dare I say it, cold.

그녀들은 그녀들에게 잔인해지는것, 비정해지는것, 그리고 이런 젠장, 차가워지는 것 말고 다른 선택지들이 있다는걸 알아야해.

I believe that the richness of Elsa’s character and her struggles is the deciding factor in Frozen’s monumental success. 

나는 엘사의 풍부한 캐릭터와 그녀의 고민이 겨울왕국의 기념비적인 성공의 열쇠였다고 믿어.

Hopefully, seeing that fully realized female characters make for a successful movie, Disney and other franchises will continue to make films with them.

이 현실적인 여성 캐릭터들이 성공적인 영화를 만들었음을 감안할때, 디즈니와 다른 프랜차이즈들이 이런 여성상들로 계속 영화를 만들어 갔으면 하는 바램이야.
