한의학, 한의술, 한방 등의 명칭을 두고 논란을 벌이기도 한다. 한의학이라고 불러주면 그것을 제대로 된 의학으로 인정해주는 꼴이 된다면서 한의술 또는 한방이라고 불러야 한다고 주장하는 사람들이 있다. 이것은 창조론이 아니라 창조설로 불러야 한다는 주장과 일맥상통한다. 일리가 있는 말이다.
하지만 어떤 사람이 영어로 “Korean medicine”이라는 표현을 쓴다고 해서 그 사람이 “한의학(Korean medicine)은 제대로 된 medicine이다”라고 생각한다고 보면 안 된다.
이것은 내가 조선민주주의인민공화국이라는 표현을 쓴다고 해도 북조선이 민주주의 국가라고 생각하는 것도, 인민의 국가라고 생각하는 것도, 공화국이라고 생각하는 것도 아닌 것과 마찬가지다.
나는 한의학과 창조론에 매우 적대적이며 엉터리라고 생각하지만 그냥 한의학, 창조론으로 불러준다.
“medical science”는 “의학”으로 번역하고 “medicine”은 “의술”로 번역하는 방법이 있다. 하지만 흔히 “medicine”을 “의학”으로 번역한다. medicine이 “학(science)”과 “술(art)”을 포괄하는 개념이기 때문에 엄밀하게 번역하는 것 자체가 무리로 보인다. 관례에 따라 그냥 “의학”으로 번역하겠다.

Medicine is the field of applied science related to the art of healing by diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. It encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness in human beings.

“alternative medicine”을 “대체 의학”으로 번역하기도 하고 “대안 의학”으로 번역하기도 한다. 대체 의학이 대세인 것 같다. 하지만 대안 의학이 뉘앙스를 더 잘 전달하는 것 같다.

위의 사전적 의미를 살린다는 의미에서 “비주류 의학”이라는 번역어도 생각해 볼 만하다.
어쨌든 나는 “대안 의학”을 선택했다.
<한의학과 대안 의학을 까발린다> 시리즈는 어떤 면에서는 독서 노트다. 우선 다음 책 두 권을 읽으면서 그 내용을 정리할 생각이다. 그 다음에 논문까지 찾아서 읽으면 더 좋겠지만 내가 그렇게까지 할지는 의문이다.
