롱펠로우의 시 인생예찬입니다.

 

제가 이 시를 처음 접했을때, 약간 벅차오르는 감정을 느꼈었습니다.

그래서 이 감정을 주변 후배들에게도 소개하고 싶은 생각으로 번역을 찾아보게 되었습니다.

 

하지만, 마땅히 마음에 내키는 번역을 찾지 못하여 벽에 막혔습니다. 그래서 여러 번역에서 따오고 일부는 조금 수정하여 아래와 같이 만들었습니다만 문제는 제가 영문학에도 무지하고 그렇다고 국문학도 썩 잘 아는편이 아니라 시의 형식이나 원문의 표현이라던지 느낌을 최대한 살려보고 싶은데 감이 안잡혀서 도움이 필요합니다 ㅠㅠ

 

다름이 아니옵고 번역이나 표현에 있어서 오점이 있으면 지적해 주셨으면 하는 바입니다.

 

 

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,
        Life is but an empty dream!
For the soul is dead that slumbers,
        And things are not what they seem.
인생은 한낱 헛된 꿈에 불과하다고,
        슬픈 어조로 말하지 말라.
잠들어 있는 영혼은 죽은 것이며,
        겉으로 보기와는 다르기에.

Life is real! Life is earnest!
        And the grave is not its goal;
Dust thou art, to dust returnest,
        Was not spoken of the soul.
인생은 진실된 것이요! 인생은 진지한 것이니!
        무덤은 인생의 종착점이 아닐지며
"너는 흙이니, 흙으로 돌아갈 것이니라"
        이 말은 영혼을 일컬음이 아니나니.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
        Is our destined end or way;
But to act, that each to-morrow
        Find us farther than to-day.
우리가 걸어야 할 길은
        향락도 아니요, 슬픔도 아니요

내일, 오늘보다 더 멀리 있을 우리를

        찾도록 행동해야 하는 하는 것이다.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
        And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
        Funeral marches to the grave.
학문은 길고 세월은 빠르나니
        우리의 심장은 굳세며 용감하나,
소리 죽인 북처럼 고동치며 
        무덤을 향해 행진하고 있다.

In the world's broad field of battle,
        In the bivouac of Life,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle!
        Be a hero in the strife!
'세상'이라는 드넓은 전장에서,
        '인생'이라는 야영지에서,
말 없이 쫒기는 짐승이 되지 말라!
        싸움에서 이기는 영웅이 되어라!

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!
        Let the dead Past bury its dead!
Act,—act in the living Present!
        Heart within, and God o'erhead!
아무리 즐겁워도, 미래를 의지하지 말라!
        죽어버린 과거는 죽은 채로 매장하라!
행동하라, 살아있는 현재에 행동하라!
        안에는 용기가, 위에는 하나님이 있다!

Lives of great men all remind us
        We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
        Footprints on the sands of time;—
위대한 자들의 생에는 우리를 깨우치나니
        우리도 숭고한 삶을 이룰 수 있고,
떠나갈 때에, 시간이란 모래 위에 
        발자국을 남길 수 있으리니라.

Footprints, that perhaps another,
        Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
        Seeing, shall take heart again.
아마도 또 다른,  
        인생의 장엄한 바다를 항해하다가,
쓸쓸히 난파당한 어느 형제가 보고서
        다시 용기를 얻게 될 그 발자국을.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
        With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
        Learn to labor and to wait.
이제 모두 힘을 내어,

       어떤 운명에도 굴하지 않을 용기를 가지고
계속해서 성취하고, 계속해서 추구하며,
       일과 인내를 배우자.

 

 

 

 

1. 이부분은 이해가 잘 안되서 다른 분의 번역을 그대로 사용했습니다만, 잠든 영혼은 죽은 영혼이며, 인생이란 이러한 죽은 영혼들이 본 것이 아니다.' 라고 이해하는게 맞나요?

For the soul is dead that slumbers,
And things are not what they seem.

 

2. 위에선 단순히 걸어야 할 길이라 써 놓았는데 시인의 의도와 너무 달라지는지 유념스럽습니다.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,
Is our destined end or way;

3. 요 아래 구절들의 번역이 조금 밋밋한 느낌이 들어서 그런데 다른 해석은 없을까요 ㅠㅠ...

Footprints, that perhaps another,
Sailing o'er life's solemn main,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,
Seeing, shall take heart again.

Let us, then, be up and doing,
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing,
Learn to labor and to wait.
