Southern trees bear strange fruit,  남쪽에 있는 나무에 이상한 열매가 열렸네.

Blood on the leaves and blood at the root, 나뭇잎과 뿌리가 피로 물들었네.

Black body swinging in the Southern breeze, 까만 몸이 산들바람에 흔들리네.

Strange fruit hanging from the poplar tree. 이상한 열매가 포플러 나무에 걸려있네.

 

Pastoral scene of the gallant South, 점잖은 남쪽의 목가적인 경치,

The bulging eyes and the twisted mouth, 튀어 나온 눈과 비뚜러진 입,

Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh, 목련꽃의 향기는 달콤하고 신선하네,

Then the sudden smell of burning flesh! 타는 육체의 갑작스런 냄새!

 

Here is fruit for the crows to pluck, 까마귀가 뜯어 먹을 과일이 여기 있네.

For the rain to gather, for the wind to suck, 비로 내릴, 바람이 들이마실,

For the sun to rot, for the trees to drop, 태양이 썩힐, 나무가 떨어뜨릴

Here is a strange and bitter crop. 여기 이상하고 쓰디 쓴 열매가 있네

 

뭐랄까... 상당히 애절하면서도 괴기한 노래네요

가사와 제목을 보면 아시겠지만 이 노래는 백인들에 의해 나무에 목매달린 흑인들을 묘사한 노래입니다.

노예들이 받아왔던 고통이 담긴 곡이라서 그런지 계속 뇌리에 강령하게 남는 곡이네요...

이제부터라도 이런 일들은 다시는 있어서는 안될텐데 말이죠...
