미국의 차기 국방장관으로 내정된 애쉬턴(Ashton Carter)라는 사람인 상당히 극단적인 대북 강경론자군요.



이 사람은 1994년 미국이 북한 영변 원자로를 폭격하려고 했을 떄 그 계획을 기안한 사람으로, 그 때 북한의 반격에 의한 한국의 희생을 감수할 가치가 있다고 말했군요.

Therefore, there were substantial risks associated with carrying that out that attack, although it would surely set back their nuclear program. 그리고 2006년 북한의 대포동 미사일 발사실험에 대하여 미사일 발사장에 대해 미국이 선제공격을 해야한다는 주장을 전임 국방장관인 월리엄 페리와 공동으로 워싱턴 포스트에 기고하기도 했군요.

한 국정부가 북한에 대한 공격을 반대하더라도 무시하고 공격을 감행해야하며, 북한이 한국에 대한 전면전으로 보복할 가능성이 있지만 실제 그럴 가능성은 낮으므로 걱정할 필요가 없으며, 그런 경우는 북한 정권을 붕괴시킬 수 있다고 주장했군요.

North Korea could respond to U.S. resolve by taking the drastic step of threatening all-out war on the Korean Peninsula. But it is unlikely to act on that threat. Why attack South Korea, which has been working to improve North-South relations (sometimes at odds with the United States) and which was openly opposing the U.S. action? An invasion of South Korea would bring about the certain end of Kim Jong Il's regime within a few bloody weeks of war, as surely he knows.

북 한의 반격 가능성을 무시하고 북한에 대해 선제공격을 하자는 것이 지론인 사람인데, 진짜 그렇게 생각하는 것인지 그에 따른 북한의 반격을 북한에 대한 전면전의 구실로 쓰려는 사람인지 알 수 없지요. 북한에 대한 전면전은 중국의 개입을 불러올텐데....

내년에 한반도는 많이 시끄럽겠습니다.
