This colorful term originated with the Skunk Works, an illicit distillery in the comic strip Li'l Abner.
생기있는 표현 "skunk work"는 연재만화 Li'l Abner의 불법적인 양조장에서 근원이 되었다. 

Because illicit distilleries were bootleg operations, typically located in an isolated area with minimal formal oversight, organizations have adopted the colorful description "skunk works" to refer to a small and often isolated department or facility that functi0ns with minimal supervision(not because of its odor).


불법적인 양조장은 불법적으로 운영되었다. 일반적으로 최소한의 공식적인 감시와 함께 고립된 지역에서 위치한다. 조직은 최소한의 감시로 기능을 하는 작고 고립되어 편의를 도모하는 것과 관련된 “skunk works"라는 생기있는 표현을 채택하였다. (냄새가 원인은 아니다)
