SEOUL: Relatives of the victims of last year’s ferry disaster scuffled with riot police at a protest in Seoul on Saturday (Apr 11), after the crowd attempted to march to the president’s residence.

작년에 발생한 세월호 참사의 희생자 유가족들은 토요일 (4월 11일) 서울에서 벌인 한 시위에서 시위대가 청와대로 행진을 시도한 후 진압경찰들과 몸싸움을 벌였다.

Hundreds of protesters violently shoved against rows of riot police lined up to prevent them from moving forward to the Blue House, as the official residence is known.

수백 명의 시위 군중들은 자신들이 청와대를 향해 나아가는 것을 막기 위해 겹겹으로 늘어선 진압경찰들을 거칠게 밀었다.

“Don’t stop this peaceful march”, the crowd chanted angrily – some of them carrying banners reading “Salvage the Truth” – as those at the front of their column tussled with the police.

Earlier a crowd of about 2,000 people heard speeches from victims’ families accusing the government of hampering a probe into the Sewol ferry disaster – the first anniversary of which falls on Thursday.

The overloaded Sewol ferry capsized and sank off Korea’s southern coast on Apr 16, 2014, claiming 304 lives, including 250 students from the same high school in Ansan City.

Over the past year, families have repeatedly staged street protests and sit-ins, demanding an independent inquiry and urging President Park Geun-Hye to deliver on her promise to continue the search for the nine victims still missing.

지난 1년 동안 가족들은 반복적으로 거리 시위와 연좌시위를 가지며 독립적 조사를 요구하고 아직 실종 상태인 9명에 대한 수색을 계속하겠다는 약속을 지킬 것을 박근혜 대통령에게 촉구했다.

Parliament passed a special law in November, initiating an independent investigation into the sinking but relatives have accused the government of seeking to hamper the probe and contain any political fallout.

국회는 11월에 특별법을 통과시켜 침몰에 대한 독립적인 조사를 착수하도록 했지만, 유족들은 정부가 조사를 방해하고 정치적인 부작용을 일으키게 한다고 비난했다.

The accident has been blamed by many on regulatory failings, official incompetence and the ship’s illegal redesign. More than 50 people have been put on trial on charges linked to the sinking, including 15 crew members – who were among the first to climb into lifeboats.

규제 실패, 공무원들의 무능 그리고 배의 불법 개조가 사고의 주된 원인으로 꼽혔다. 최초로 구조선에 오른 15명을 포함하여 50명 이상이 배의 침몰과 관련된 혐의로 기소되어 재판을 받았다

On Monday, after a similar protest by families last weekend, Park said she would consider salvaging the sunken ferry to find those bodies still unrecovered. The raising of the vessel – if approved – will likely cost an estimated 120 billion won (US$110 million).

지난 주말 가족들의 시위 이후 월요일 박근혜 대통령은 여전히 실종상태인 실종자들을 발견하기 위해 침몰된 선박을 인양하는 것을 고려할 것이라고 말했다. 만약 승인된다면 선박 인양은 약 1200억 원 (일억 천만 달러)의 비용이 소용될 것으로 예상된다.

The Sewol’s captain was jailed in November for 36 years for gross negligence and dereliction of duty, while three other senior crew members were sentenced to jail terms of between 15 and 30 years.

작년 11월, 세월호 선장은 중과실과 직무유기 혐의로 36년 징역형에 처해졌고, 다른 3명의 상급 승무원들은 15년에서 30년 사이의 징역형을 선고받았다.
