For one staunchly conservative city in central Texas, the decision to fuel the city with 100 percent renewable energy was all about seeing green – cash, that is.
Georgetown, a city of 67,000 about 30 miles north of Austin, is one of the first cities in the nation to get 100 percent of its power from solar or wind. Directly at the center of redline Texas, Georgetown isn't the obvious fit for clean energy advocates, but Mayor Dale Ross says the U.S. is facing a "tipping point moment" in energy costs, and cities such as Georgetown are aiming to stay ahead of the curve.
The Republican mayor, re-elected with 72 percent of the votein May, doesn't see renewable energy as a political issue.
